Project Methodology
To evaluate the programme’s impact, researchers are conducting a randomized controlled trial with hundreds of first-generation women engineering students across two cohorts, with half receiving the programme intervention and the rest serving as a comparison group. DIA led survey programming and piloting of instruments measuring technical skills, higher-order cognitive ability, and socio-emotional outcomes; executed baseline, midline, and endline assessments including lab-in-the-field tasks, recruiter evaluations, and self-perception metrics; coordinated with trainers and students; and tracked participation to manage attrition. A cross-validation exercise compares recruiters’ perceptions of students’ skills, gathered through mock interviews, against students’ self-assessments to understand alignment with labour market expectations.
Impact
Pre-programme data showed that students, despite strong academic potential, struggle with workplace readiness, emotional intelligence, and navigating gendered expectations in professional settings. This contextual understanding of student challenges offers important insight for tailoring future interventions and policymaking aimed at closing the persistent gap between STEM graduation and formal STEM employment for women in India.
